CO Monitors in PA28s

The CO Monitors we purchased for our aircraft to comply with CAA regulations have been found to generate an unacceptable alarm rate in the PA28s.  We have therefore reverted to “domestic” style detectors and “Spot” detector cards for the PA28s. The Domestic detectors should show a slow flashing (40 sec) green light at bottom of the detector and a CO reading in the LCD display in parts per million (ppm).  Pressing the light will test the detector.

The detector will go off (loud beeping) if CO levels reach >100ppm for 10-40 minutes.  This level will cause mild headache and fatigue after 2 – 3 hours.  If the level persists you should consider aborting the sortie.

At >200ppm  the alarm will sound within 1 minute.  This level can affect your eyes, make you nauseous and give you cramps within 45 minutes and render you unconscious with 2 hours.  YOU MUST ABORT YOUR SORTIE AND LAND ASAP

The Spot card detectors will turn grey or black on detecting CO.  they are a back up to the active detector.
