Message from Our Chairman

Dear Member,

Yesterday we celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the formation of the Halton Aero Club. During the day, we generated 30 sorties and had up to 3 Halton aircraft continually airborne from 0900-2000hrs. This was followed by a fantastic BBQ and social event.

I would like to say a huge thank-you to everyone that helped with the planning, set-up, running and tidy-up! In particular, Mike Russell, Buster & Lisa, Steve T, Dusty Miller, Rob Churchward, Dave Scott, Rachel W, Sam, Mark Devlin, Chris Williams, Dave Seath, everyone that flew or helped to clean/refuel aircraft, and of course, anyone that I have missed!

A lot of photos have been taken and will be placed on the Members’ Area of the website. Additionally, it was great to see Dollar and Nick Pin flying in from North Weald. Dollar has sent the following link to his photo drop-box which will be accessible for one month:

Finally, one of our Junior Rank & Officer Scholars solo’d today, congratulations to Josh Wrighton and a big thank-you to Deacon and Bob for getting him to solo standard! Just one more ab-initio Scholar to finish.

Happy 100th!

Message from Ops Mgr

My thanks also to everyone who helped pull together an amazing day – our predecessors would have been very proud of the Club they formed a 100 years ago!

We flew 18 sorties in Club ac for a total of 22.8 hours and 10 private ac flown by Club members clocked up 10 sorties totalling 8.1 hours.  So 28 sorties for 30.9 hours.  Quite a day! If you didn’t get your log book stamped with the unique HAC Centenary Stamp, please drop into the office to do so.

As Mark said, I’ll collate all photos and video onto a page on the website in due course and Dilshan  is compiling a video from the material he collected on Saturday morning, so if you have any photos or video please send to me.

June Fly-In & Airshow Calendar

June Fly-In & Airshow Calendar

June Air Shows & Fly-Ins

Good morning all,

I’ve put together a list of events for June, which includes a mix of fly-ins and a few drive-in options. The goal is to inspire us all to get flying—or at least give some purpose to those summer trips!

With the warmer weather now here, there’s something happening nearly every weekend, from local fly-ins to larger airshows. I’ll aim to share a new list each month throughout the summer so we can all make the most of the season.

For those longer-distance events, don’t forget about the new flight-sharing WhatsApp group—perfect for coordinating trips and splitting costs with fellow members.

If you know of any events I’ve missed or have suggestions for future months, feel free to drop me an email.

Happy flying,

Elliot Emery, HAC Social Secretary

Land-Away at Sleap: Sunshine, Spitfires and a Seat in a Chipmunk
By Fg Off Ben Sturgess, HAC JROPSS Scholar

As part of the Junior Rank Officer Pilot Scholarship Scheme (JROPSS), I have been making my way through the PPL syllabus at Halton Aeroplane Club (HAC); as if that wasn’t enough of a privilege, I was incredibly fortunate to be invited on a land-away by OIC HAC, Air Cdre Mark Manwaring.

Originally, we had plans to head to Skegness, but as I’m learning quickly, the weather forecast played its part and altered the plot. Sleap Aerodrome in Shrewsbury became our new destination; a more than worthy alternative, as it turned out!

The club were brilliantly accommodating, allowing me to squeeze in my flying lesson in the morning before the full squadron departed for Sleap. I was offered the irrefusable opportunity of a back seat ride in Nev Gardener’s beautiful 1952 DeHavilland Chipmunk G-BWVY, quite different from the PA28 I’d been flying just an hour beforehand.

We set off in good company- Air Cdre Manwaring led the way in the RV6 G-RVST followed by Bryan Ascroft in Chippy G-BXIM, Perry Harris  in his Jodel G-BKAO, Jonathan Smith in his Piper Cub G-ATZM with Paul BH, Charlie Moss & Sham Maslisham bringing up the rear in the club’s trusty PA28 G-BPRY. Nev Gardner and I joined the pack in the Chipmunk.

The flight itself was approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes of smooth, warm May air and stunning scenery. Upon arrival at Sleap, we were greeted not only by a welcoming crowd, but also by the sight of a stunning Avro Anson and the well documented replica Spitfire built by Steve Markham. The bistro café didn’t disappoint – great food and coffee, all enjoyed under the glorious sunshine. We also met up with Maj Gen John Cracket who is a member at Sleap as well as a long-standing HAC member who had coincidentally visited Halton the previous Wednesday in his Cirrus G20.

The return leg provided another unexpected bonus for those who saw it: Charlie managed to snap a photo of the Lancaster ‘City of Lincoln’ as it flew home to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight following a display; the perfect end to a thoroughly brilliant day.

All in all, it was a fantastic experience – a genuine introduction to what the HAC flying club is all about: Great aircraft, great people, and great memories. If you haven’t yet joined one of their land-away events, then pencil it into your diary; you’ll come back with a grin, a few more logbook hours, and at least one more story to tell!

Shuttleworth Visit

Shuttleworth Visit

A group of pilots from Halton Aero Club had the fantastic opportunity to visit the @Shuttleworth Collection Engineering Open Day in February. The day was a resounding success, offering fascinating insights into the evolution of radial engines, the intricate differences between replicas and restorations, and the immense effort required to keep such a remarkable collection airborne.

It was truly inspiring to witness the dedication, skill, and vast knowledge of the workshop team, whose hard work ensures these historic aircraft continue to fly. As an unexpected treat, we were also treated to an impromptu aerobatic display by a pair of Pitts Biplanes, making the day even more memorable.

A huge thank you to the Shuttleworth Collection for their hospitality and for sharing their passion for aviation with us!

At Halton Aero Club, we regularly organise group visits, land-aways, and insightful presentations covering a wide range of aeronautical topics. Members are always encouraged to take part

—so if you haven’t joined us yet, what are you waiting for? ✈️
