Flight Safety Considerations as You Return to the Air After a Long Layoff

I write as I expect you are starting to think about getting airborne after a long layoff – exciting times ahead!

Here are some things for you to consider:

The GASCo (General Aviation Safety Council) Returning to flying in the wake of COVID-19 online course is mandatory for you to complete before you go flying again. This has been put together by some of the best GA people in the world. https://www.gasco.org.uk/

We have uploaded most of the docs you need to read, to get back INTO THE GREEN, on the HAC website – on the Flight Safety page. You will need the standard password to access the HAC Flying Order Book.

A reminder on reporting. There are CAA/MAA occurrences that are Mandatory for reporting – a list is available on the Flight Safety board in the club. However, we encourage Voluntary reporting.

Ask yourself, ‘could someone else learn from my experience today?’. This is exactly what Paul B-H considered when he was on a landaway to Norwich, transiting near RAF Marham. As a result, RAF Marham and Norwich airport have re-assessed their procedures to improve traffic deconfliction. His great spot, using superb airmanship, means that he is being awarded a ‘Well Done’ by the Royal Air Force Safety Centre and Inspector of Flight Safety.

Please use the In-Forms for anything Voluntary; there are hard copies in the club or an electronic version on the website. Alternatively, you could submit a DASOR. You are welcome to call me to discuss, my mobile number is below.

Any Mandatory Occurrence Reports (MORs) will need to be reported using a DASOR. The Duty Airfield Manager will be able to assist you in doing this, please ask them for help.

JABIRU ON GO AROUND HITS STATIONARY GLIDER

There were no serious injuries when a Jabiru on go around from an unstable approach struck a parked SZD-51 Junior glider awaiting a winch launch. The Field Investigation report in the AAIB May Bulletin raises the importance, when two qualified pilots fly together, of agreeing clear roles and responsibilities particularly when critical controls can be accessed from only one seat.

The other Field Investigation report concerns a heavy landing of a Jodel D117A when the pilot’s prosthetic adapter disconnected from the control column late in the approach. The pilot was unhurt.

In private flying as in all other branches of life in these difficult times there is a majority that is compliant and considerate and a few who appear to believe that they are above the rules for the mere ordinary.
